Moissanite is a rare naturally occurring mineral, was named after a French doctor who discovered the silicon carbide matter at a meteorite strike site in Arizona in 1893. After his discovering, a thermal growing process that creates these silicon carbide crystals was developed and this is now how moissanite gemstones are formed.
Why YCL Works with Moissanite
Moissanite | |
Durability: Gemstones are measured on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, which assesses a stones ability to withstand surface scratching. |
Moissanite scores a 9.25 on the Mohs scale. This makes it one of the hardest substances on earth and suitable for ceremonial rings that are worn daily. |
Brilliance: Refers to the stones ability to reflect white light. |
Moissanite reflects light beautifully and often refracts light in a way that creates a 'rainbow effect’. Moissanite has a refractive index from 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than a diamond. |
Costing |
The cost of moissanite stones do vary depending on size, cut & carat, however typically cost far less than diamonds. |
Sustainabilty |
Moissanite stones are not mined meaning there is no risk of unsustainable gem mining, lack of rehabilitation to the environment, exploitation of human labor, or indirectly supporting conflict. |
